Cultural diversity in Sydney at the 10th annual Living in Harmony Festival 2011

Cultural diversity in Sydney to be celebrated at the 10th annual Living in Harmony Festival, with free community events running throughout March and April.

Living in Harmony Festival 2011program includes tours exploring Sydney’s multicultural heritage, cultural days, talks, workshops, a panel discussion and a multicultural concert celebrating the diversity within the City of Sydney.

Living in Harmony Festival Gala Event, Australians All photography exhibition and Chinese, Indonesian and Spanish cultural days ar just some of the highlights.

The Festival coincides with National Harmony Day on 21 March, which is also the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

2011 Sydney Living in Harmony Festival Highlights
Living in Harmony Festival Gala Event – Multicultural Extravaganza 
This year’s Living in Harmony launch event will showcase colourful performances from the City’s multicultural communities including singing and traditional dance.
21 March at 1pm – 3.30pm

Australians All Photography Exhibition
Moving exhibition of photographic works taken in NSW’s diverse ethnic communities will take you into local homes and churches, providing a rare window into the richness and humanity of our NSW suburbs.
17 – 26 March (launch on 17 March at 6pm)
Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, 64 Pine Street, Chippendale

Pride in Colour – Community Gathering
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) community members and service providers are coming together to form a new multicultural working group called Pride in Colour. Pride in Colour is inviting people from these diverse groups across Sydney and New South Wales to attend a community get together.
5 April at 4pm – 6pm

Panel Discussion – Media and Values
Panel discussion examining the critical role the media plays in establishing social harmony within society, and the need to respect the values of all people. Featuring key figures from local media, religious and cultural communities.
4 April at 7pm – 9.30pm
Barnet Long Room, Customs House, 31 Alfred Street, Circular Quay

Chinese Cultural Days
Chinese kung-fu, calligraphy and feng shui workshops or a traditional tea ceremony, alongside music and dance performances from some of Sydney’s leading Chinese organisations.
13 and 14 April at 10.30am – 4pm
Chinese Garden of Friendship, Darling Harbour South End 

Indonesian Cultural Day
 Indonesian culture through traditional dance and Balinese musical instruments.  Enjoy sumptuous Indonesian food and get involved in a variety of interactive workshops.
16 April at 10am – 2.30pm
Redfern Town Hall, 73 Pitt Street, Redfern

Spanish Cultural Diversity Day
Family fiesta that will display the diversity of Spanish cultures, including Spanish and Latin American music talks, flamenco dancing demonstrations, craft lessons, games for children and delicious paella!

Cross-Cultural Tours
Join one of the City’s cross-cultural tours to learn more about the diverse cultural heritage of the people and places in our local community.

Aboriginal Heritage Tour, Royal Botanic Gardens   1 April at 2pm – 3.30pm

The Rocks Walking Tour, The Rocks – 18 April at 10.30 am – 12pm

Auburn Gallipoli Mosque, Auburn – 27 April at 1pm – 3pm
