Concert 2 of the Subscription Series 2010
Dmitry SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975): String Quartet No 1 in C (1938)
Heitor VILLA-LOBOS (1887-1959): Bachianas brasileiras No 6 for flute and bass clarinet (1938)
Nigel WESTLAKE (b 1958): Entomology for flute, bass clarinet, violin, cello, percussion and tape (1990)
Robert SCHUMANN (1810-1856): Piano Quintet in E flat Opus 44 (1842) – 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth
Shostakovich began his first string quartet not knowing whether he would get beyond a few pages of it but enjoyed his task so much that string quartets became one of his greatest and most numerous means of expression. He never wrote anything more unselfconsciously cheerful than this spontaneous and concise opening instalment of his many dialogues for four strings. The Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos is entirely characteristic, in contrast, in producing the luxuriantly relaxed texture of the sixth of his ‘Brazilian Bachisms’ for just two instruments, flute and bass clarinet. Heightened rhythm, nearly always urgent and driving, pulses through Nigel Westlake’s Entomology in an entirely contemporary way that is also freshly appealing. The sense of happiness and even jubilation in much of this program reaches its climax in the great Piano Quintet of Robert Schumann, whose birth 200 years ago is celebrated internationally in 2010. This is a work in which we can hear, if we wish, the sense of a tremendous personal release from years of frustration and disappointment, expressed in music of supreme vigour and beauty.
