DARK, SPLENDOUR AND DAWN
A concert for the senses
Sydney Youth Orchestras is one of Sydney’s most exciting arts organisations, presenting the new generation of outstanding musicians in concerts full of innovation, passion and vitality. On Saturday 11 September at the iconic Sydney Town Hall, Sydney Youth Orchestras finest young musicians, together with acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell, will present a charming, haunting and stirring Gala Concert entitled Dark, Splendour and Dawn.
Dark, Splendour and Dawn will take you on a journey through dance, love, darkness and rebirth, and will feature such well-known pieces as Weber’s Invitation to the Dance and Stravinsky’s blazing youthful masterpiece The Firebird. This concert will also be a rare opportunity to experience Berlioz’s intimate masterpiece, the haunting and delicate song cycle Les Nuits d’Ete (Summer Nights).
WEBER (arr Berlioz) – Invitation to the Dance. Weber dedicated Invitation to the Dance to his wife Caroline (they had been married only a few months). It was the first concert waltz to be written: a seductive melody which gradually blooms into a splendid scene and then fades gently away like dream vision.
BERLIOZ – Les Nuits d’ete. Based on the poems of the great and enigmatic Theophile Gautier, this evocative song cycle is bursting with love, loss, wistful nostalgia and captivating imagery. Berlioz’s mastery of the orchestra and the voice is clearer here than anywhere else, and the songs are a perfect vehicle for Sally-Anne Russell. One of Australia’s most versatile and popular artists, Sally is a principal guest mezzo-soprano with Opera Australia and has featured with the Sydney and Melbourne Symphonies and the Pinchgut Opera. Her operatic roles have included Isabella (L’Italiana in Algeri), Angelina (La Cenerentola) and Rosina (ll Barbiere di Siviglia).
KHACHATURIAN – Masquerade Suite. This piece of music was written in 1941, accompanying one of the most famous theatre productions of all time. The Masquerade Suite veers from the splendid to the grotesque, all with Khachaturian’s trademark colour and freshness.
STRAVINSKY – Firebird Suite. Commissioned by Serge Diaghilev, Director of Ballet Russes, this dazzling piece brought overnight success to Stravinsky. Based on a series of Russian fairytales, Stravinsky’s masterpiece is full of slashing colour and rhythmic vibrance.
We are pleased to have one of Australia’s leading resident Conductors,
Brett Kelly. Over the past decades Brett has regularly conducted the Melbourne, Tasmanian, Adelaide and West Australian Symphony
Orchestras, along with the Queensland Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia and Southern Sinfonia (Dunedin) orchestras.
Treat yourself to a wondrous and exhilarating evening of captivating orchestral music presented by The Sydney Youth Orchestras – as only they can do!
