A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OPEN THE BOX
The Sydney Symphony have gifted the people of Sydney and New South Wales, including its visitors, an open invitation to a fantastic programme of music detailed in their launch of their Season for 2009 at the stunning Altitude Restaurant in Sydney’s Shangri-La Hotel.
What is on offer throughout 2009 is the opportunity to enjoy world class performances of a varied and exciting menu of fantastic music. The Sydney Symphony and its new Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Ashkenazy have put together a stellar line-up of some of the world’s finest classical musicians, an innovative film and jazz series and a promise of performances of the highest caliber throughout Sydney and New South Wales. Music by composers Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Shostakovich, Walton, and Prokofiev will thrill audiences. There should not be ‘a spare ticket in the house’ in the coming year for a programme of this superb quality.
But why stop at just attending and listening.
Even more rewarding is to explore further. When, for example, we view a painting by say Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec or Francis Bacon, how much more interesting it becomes if we learn about the artist himself, where did they live, the dynamics of their personality, and the techniques of how they painted. Viewing art then becomes a more complete and rewarding experience
Thus it is with music. For those who are new or only casual listeners to what we refer to as ‘classical music’ there is extraordinary enrichment to be obtained by delving into the lives of the composers. The coming year presents everyone with a chance to approach ‘the Season’ with a new approach – open the box right up and discover so much more. Make it a ‘Total Experience’.
All of this possibility is enhanced by the arrival in Sydney of the Principal Conductor, Vladimir Ashkenazy. Sydney audiences have already experienced the special chemistry of this World-renowned conductor and musician. Now however, he will spend a considerable amount of time each year in Sydney during his agreed four year term. Under his guidance performances will be electric and memorable and should not be missed.
The opportunity for the ‘Total Experience’ actually arrives earlier than the 2009 Season. In November this year the Sydney Symphony is staging The Elgar Festival with performances under the baton of Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy. Here is the perfect moment to decide to attend and enjoy extraordinarily evocative music and wonderful performing artists whilst learning about the complex and sensitive human being that was Edward Elgar.
What impact did a roller coaster of a life have on Elgar’s compositions; did life around him influence his work, what meaning could the music have for me and my life today? What fun to explore these ideas whilst enjoying the musical experience!
