Not quite the Golden Globes but still a room full of talent
The Golden Globe Awards 2012 (to honour the best in film) were being beamed around the world from the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel this night with hundreds of cameras flashing and the red carpet surely sizzling underfoot of coutured celebrities and manicured movie makers.  Meanwhile, at Sydney’s Paddington RSL Club, another awards ceremony was taking place – the Sydney Theatre Awards for 2011 – honouring the cream of Sydney’s thespian artists.   The ‘red carpet’ here was a patch set aside under a lamp with the ‘celebrities’, stage and theatre royalty barely distinguishable from most others in their crinkled jeans and shirts, daggy t-shirts and can you believe it – ‘thongs’.   There were a couple of notable exceptions (including of course Miranda Otto) but come on guys!  We do understand that these awards have little  ‘budget’ but how hard is it for participants to make some effort with their wardrobe as a note of respect for the awards – and their industry.

Sydney’s live theatre scene can rival any city in the world with the diversity and quality of the productions on offer, the performing talent on stage and the wonderful wizardry of those behind the ‘lights’ .  The 2011 nominees for best actress included the likes of Cate Blanchett (winner), Judy Davis, Susie Porter, Kate Mulvany and Robyn Nevin – a high impact line-up in any thespian language.  Thunderous, enthusiastic applause reverberated around the room as each winner was announced with several prize recipients quite overwhelmed. The Belvoir’s acclaimed production of ‘The Wild Duck’ picked up four awards with the Darlinghurst Theatre’s ‘The Libertine’ the other major winner.   David Williamson received (not surprisingly) the ‘2011 Sydney Theatre Award for Lifetime Achievement’ in recognition of his extraordinary career as Australia’s leading playwright.
