Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race drops anchor for 2009 – smaller, but cheery crowd
I dashed back from spending Christmas in the very fashionable Southern Highlands to get some photos before the yachts left for their jaunt across the Tasman Sea. Unfortunatley ‘Wild Oats’ and ‘Alpha Romaro’ left from their own marinas to participate in the race. I did capture a few pics of some of the other notable including Grant Warrington who had to replace his boats mast prior to the race and had to fly a new one out from France and was then sadly forced to retire.
Ludde Ingvall was on YuuZoo this year after having won the Sydney to Hobart previously on Nicorette. Mike Slade, who owns ‘Leopard’ has his own private secretary who travels with the boat and who lives in London between races, managed to cross the line in 3rd place.
An interesting group there to cheer on the starters was the six girls from the “Airborn Cheerleaders’ Squad who will represent Australia at the World Cheerleading Titles.
Crowds for the start of the race were down on previous years but then it wasn’t exactly a brilliant summer’s day.
