Dr Seuss is now alive and available to all in Sydney
Dr Seuss, born Theodor Seuss Geisel in 1904 in Massachusetts USA, is one of the world’s most loved authors and illustrators of children’s books, ‘Ted’ was also a major caricaturist and artist with his work sought after worldwide. Now, strictly limited editions of this much loved icon’s work are on exhibition in Sydney at The Art of Dr Seuss Gallery in Woollahra.
The Art of Dr Seuss Gallery, with its gleaming mirrored walls and polished floors, immersed us into a wonderland of wonderful characters that leapt out from the walls and sneaked sly peeks at opening night guests from behind glass enclaves. This was no ordinary art gallery launch party as the ghost of Dr Seuss was there amongst us in all his jocular glory.
Trevor Victor Harvey’s Gallery at Seaforth on the Northern Beaches is a long time favourite amongst collectors and lovers of fine art. When word got out that the Trevor Victor Harvey Gallery had secured the Australasian rights to the art of Dr Seuss anticipation built for the launch night event of his new gallery in Woollahra.
Trevor Harvey introduced special guest Ron Epskamp, Managing Director of the Exhibition Gallery of Fine Art in Wellington New Zealand, and together they immersed us back into the delightful world of Dr Seuss with anecdotes and stories. Then came the big moment when, with a ‘caricaturist’ flourish, Trevor whipped off a lush velvet cover to reveal a limited edition 50th Anniversary ’Sneetches’ print, one of Dr Seuss’s most adored characters.
The gallery launch party guest list included artists Palla Jeroff and Geoff White, who along with us will have to venture back to the Art of Dr Seuss Gallery to take in more of the well known and less often seen works from the amazing imagination of Dr Seuss.
Dr Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) wrote and illustrated 44 children’s books that have been translated into more than 15 languages. ‘Ted’s’ works have also provided the source for eleven children’s television specials, a Broadway musical and a feature-length motion picture. Other major motion pictures are on the way. His honors included two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award and the Pulitzer Prize.
