Categories include musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, opera, classical music, dance and physical theatre. The Helpmann Awards also incorporates the JC Williamson Award for outstanding contribution to the Australian live performance industry.
The After Party at The Argyle, The Rocks, Sydney
A thousand Helpmann Awards after partyers crammed into ’The Argyle ‘ to celebrate, catch up with friends and to just… well…party. The cream of Australian talent streamed in from the Awards at the Opera House by bus, cab or on foot and all were eagerly seeking a drink (or so) and food – four hours in the Concert Hall at the Opera House will do that.
It was shuffle room only over the Argyle’s cobblestoned courtyard as the staff did a mightly job filling glasses and delivering copies amounts of food for the hungry hoards. Two of the earliest arrivals who missed the awards due to other commitments, were Ruby Rose and Grand Dodwell who made great early company for MiSociety. There were so many ‘faces’ there but, due to the crush, photography was almost impossible.
As the party didn’t start till 11pm we were sure the crowd would thin quickly, but not this lively bunch – it was still going strong at close to 2am.
