John Chisholm Marten’s legacy lives on through talented young Australians
The Marten Bequest Scholarship Winners Event 2012, where scholarships were awarded to five young talented Australians, was appropriately held in Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art that’s shortly to be re-opened after major renovations and with much promise for the future projection of matters cultural.
The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships, awarded annually to talented young artists, were established by Sydneysider John Chisholm Marten, a theatrical artist and life-long patron of the arts and literature
The Trust Company, as Trustee, and the 2012 Judges announced the winners of the 2012 Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships, each worth $20,000, in the specific fields of Architecture, Ballet, Instrumental Music, Poetry and Prose.
The Trust Company is probably not immediately associated in the public’s mind with cultural pursuits but MiSociety learnt on the night that their activities include the stewardship of a surprisingly large number of trusts whose aim is promote and support art and artists.
MiSociety thoroughly enjoyed a Sydney cocktail party where the firm focus was on talent and not, hmmm, ‘celebrities’. One of those talented winners, Michael Barraclough, adeptly kept a very straight face whilst telling MiSociety prior to the announcements that he had not been successful this year with his submission – obviously strictly keeping to the embargo in place. Perhaps a career featuring diplomacy is where Michael will eventually go.
Many of the Marten Bequest winners could not be present on the night but those absentees had a valid excuse note as we learnt that each was tied to performance commitments far and away from Sydney (well, one was on honeymoon so the explanation was in essence the same) which only underlined that these up-and-coming Australians are already much in demand. Keep an eye open for the five talented winners.
The 2012 Marten Bequest winners are:
Architecture: Michael Barraclough
Ballet: Aeden Pittendreigh
Instrumental Music: Aura Go
Poetry: Michelle Dicinoski
Prose: Christopher Currie
