HAMLET and TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA By William Shakespeare PLUS MAGETSI By Denton Chikura – 3 PLAYS BY 2 ACTORS

  • Tuesday 12 – Saturday 16 March 2013
  • Riverside Theatre Parramatta

Imagine an African duo of actors with incredible comedic skill taking on Shakespeare and you will get some idea of how absolutely delightful these productions of Hamlet (Kupenga Kwa Hamlet) and Two Gentlemen of Verona (Vakomana Variri Ve Zimbabwe), which featured at the World Shakespeare Festival are to watch.

African actors Chikura and Munyevu, who are based in London, are more than just a comic turn; they are an experienced and highly sophisticated pair of actors with a great mastery of timing and contrast, switching effortlessly from male to female and back again, and from slapstick to pain and tragedy.

Together, they explore the issues and sense of displacement, felt by Shakespeare’s black characters and relate it to their own experiences as black men in a white world.  By doing so, the actors create a unique production that has a broad, loud, triumphantly energetic ‘township’ style.
