Glenn Wheeler drops his daks for a little ‘Variety’
Variety’s Melbourne Cup Day luncheons are legendary and their 25th anniversary one this year was a real top notch affair for both the guests and the very special young guests who had their party in the adjoining function room.
Variety is dedicated to empowering Australian children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs and if the broad smiles on these little heroes’ faces were anything to go by then the day was a roaring success.
Formally called into lunch by the Town Crier we were greeted by a stage performance in the style of My Fair Lady. The venue looked fabulous and it was apparent that the lunch was a ‘sell out’ as it would have been a struggle to fit in another table.
Glenn Wheeler, decked out in an outrageous zebra suit, carried off a masterly performance as the Master of Ceremonies while being ably supported by the effervescent Sami Lukis.
Glenn lost more than just his shirt at the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup – he lost his whole suit. But it was all in good fun in the race to raise extra dosh for the kids. Not content with a ‘send it to you later’ approach Glenn spun off his jacked and dropped his daks to reveal his jockey silk coloured jocks to uproarious applause from the room. Bruce Newey, Chief Barker for Variety to the tune of $1600 is now the proud owner of the not understated outfit – we await it’s next appearance.
Barry Crocker and Paul Hogan were amongst the original group behind the Variety Lunch and Barry reminisced to us how they had all met up at the old Hilton Hotel restaurant and hatched the idea.
Bidding was strong for the auction items on offer that spread across everything from ladies hats, to art work to sporting paraphernalia.
As a finale to an excellent afternoon, party band The Neville’s, soon had the entire crowd on the dance floor for a real knees up of a good time. Well done everyone.
Take our advice and get in early to book for this one next year.
