Australia Ensemble at Sir John Clancy Auditorium UNSW
Program for concert 2 of the 2012 series

  • Maurice RAVEL (1875-1937): Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé for soprano voice, piccolo, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, string quartet, piano (1913)
  • Darius MILHAUD (1892-1974): Suite for clarinet, violin and piano from the music for Anouilh’s Le Voyageur sans bagage, Opus 157b (1936/7)
  • Andrew SCHULTZ (b 1960) : One Sound: Quintet for flute and strings, commissioned by the Australia Ensemble@UNSW – first performance (2012)
  • Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897): Piano Quintet in F minor Opus 34 in F minor (1864)

Mallarmé, the difficult and sometimes deliberately enigmatic poet whose words inspired Debussy’s famous Prelude to ‘The Afternoon of a Faun’ [See the March program], gave Ravel the sort of challenge he relished when the composer chose to make his settings of three Mallarmé poems into a piece of chamber music, in which vocal and instrumental parts mesh with a skill and style newly focused by Ravel’s recent hearing of Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire and Stravinsky’s Three Japanese Lyrics. Milhaud’s much more light-hearted suite from 1936/7 takes us into the world of French theatre with some of his incidental music for Jean Anouilh’s comedy Traveller Without Luggage. The Australia Ensemble@UNSW’s newest commissioned work is One Sound, a quintet for flute and strings by Andrew Schultz, one of Australia’s leading composers and the author of one of the Ensemble’s most rewarding previous commissions. It will have its first performance at this concert. The program concludes with one of the grandest chamber works of Brahms, his tender, playful, powerful and stirring F minor Piano Quintet.
