Where can you see Christmas decorations in Sydney? All around the city!
“City of Sydney takes great pride in decorating the streets and public spaces for the festive season. It’s a very special time of year and our sparkling trees, colourful flowers and bright lights help to create a magic atmosphere in the city.” Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
Christmas decorations and trees are sparkling all over the City heralding the start of the festive season and City of Sydney’s Australian themed celebrations.
MARTIN PLACE
The installation of Sydney’s most celebrated Christmas tree, an icon for 73 years, is underway in Martin Place.
Each year thousands of children flock to the City to see Santa and the Lord Mayor light up the 21-metre tree at the annual Christmas Concert (Thursday 26 November).
Adorned with 58,000 LED lights, more than 300 seven pointed stars, and a 1500mm seven pointed shimmering tree top star, the tree takes 12 people eight days to install. Stars hang from street lighting poles in Martin Place to guide people to the magnificent tree.
KINGS CROSS
A new 6-metre tall tree with 6,500 LED lights and seven pointed stars is in Kings Cross this year, and similar trees will decorate Customs House, Sydney Square and St Mary’s Cathedral.
TAYLOR SQUARE
Taylor Square has a modern 8-metre tree which reflects the artistic and cultural influences of the area, with added shimmer this year to increase the impact.
The front balcony to the Town Hall has a 7.5-metre tree with glittering stars and 80 LED colour-changing baubles in traditional red, green and gold.
CITY VILLAGES
City villages will also have their share of Christmas sparkle. Southern Cross stars will criss-cross Erskineville Road, Crown Street, Redfern Street, Darlinghurst Road and Glebe Point Road.
Floral displays will flank city trees and flower boxes full of red, green and gold blooms, and bud lighting will twinkle from trees in City villages.
More than 1300 street banners will decorate the city streets featuring Australian flora and fauna such as gumnut flowers, Bottlebrushes, the Sulphur-crested cockatoo, the Major Mitchell Cockatoo, Spider Flower and Native Fuschia.
City of Sydney is committed to a sustainable Christmas through use of energy efficient materials, decoration reuse and recycling initiatives.
The electricity used for decorations and trees will be matched with accredited GreenPower thanks to our sponsor EnergyAustralia.
