World Press Photo of the Year 2012 features the world’s best photojournalism from 2011 with over 200 powerful images

The State Library’s festival of photography launches on Saturday 30 June with World Press Photo 2012 & Photos 1440. World Press Photo 2012 features the world’s best photojournalism from 2011 with over 200 powerful and evocative colour and black and white images by 57 photographers of 24 nationalities, including multi award-winning Australian sports photographer Adam Pretty.
World Press Photo of the Year was awarded to Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda for his arresting picture of a mother holding her wounded son inside a mosque in Sanaa, Yemen. Australian Adam Pretty received a ‘Sports Stories’ award for a stunning photo from the FINA World Aquatics Championships in China (attached).
Photos 1440 presents a uniquely local story with more than 100 of the best published and unpublished works by Sydney Morning Herald photographers from the same year. The photographs are taken of Australian life from 1440 minutes a day.
