Olivia Newton-John steals the show at the opening night of Xanadu
If you were a fan of the 1980′s movie ‘Xanadu’ starring Australia’s own Olivia Newton-John then you cannot miss ‘Xanadu The Musical’.

Xanadu The Musical is produced by Mark Pennell and Phillip Corr, directed by Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Kelley Abbey.  Xanadu The Broadway Musical has come home down under as a quirky, family-friendly and somewhat zany show revamping the 1980′s movie into a modem day love story comedy that comes  to life (roller-skates and all) on the main stage.

The VIP opening night of Xanadu The Musical was held at the Grand Xanadu Marquee at Melbourne’s Docklands.  I had a great time mingling with other guests enjoying drinks at the bar and the ‘carnival’ goodies such as buttered pop corn, Malteasers and fairy floss.

Celebrities and notable guests, their friends and even their young families came along to this grand opening night to step back in time to when roller-skates and leg warmers were new and considered cool.

Australian entertainment iconic names like Molly Melldrum, Lauren Newton, Steve Vizard, Jason Coleman and many more were casually weaving their way around the select crowd.

Olivia Newton-John, the original star in the Xanadu movie,  greeted us in the marquee theatre and proceeded to rev up the audience to kick start the show.

Main cast member Christie Whelan (who plays Kira / Clio) gave a faultless performance and has proven to be a very talented all-round performer.  The ensemble cast gave admirable performances full of energy, timeliness, technical ability and spunk.

The highlight of the night for me was at the finale when the famous song ‘Xanadu’ was being performed and Olivia Newton-John stepped up onto the stage from the audience to join in singing with Christie Whelan.
